CHINESE Imperial Dragon Bomber Jacket - Red
As the name suggests the dragon depicted on the front is based on one of the dragons from the 9-Dragon Wall (九龍壁)in Beijing’s Forbidden city. This palace was once home to the emperors from the Ming Dynasty from the early 1400’s all the way up to the last dynasty of China (Qing Dynasty 1636-1912). This wall was built 1771 displaying the 9 types of Dragon. This particular dragon is the Azure Dragon, as well symbolising power, greatness and wisdom the Azure Dragon represents the cardinal direction of East and the season of Spring.
On the back there is an ancient Chinese idiom referenced in the 14th century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms (三國演義)the idiom translates into English as “the fierce dragon crosses the river” (猛龍過江).One of this idioms meanings is used to refer to somebody who is highly skilled or talented travelling to another area to proliferate their talents. In ancient times dragons are always attributed to ones who have or have the potential to achieve greatness. This saying is also the Chinese name for Bruce Lee's Film Way of the Dragon.
