The Korean national flower is the 무궁화 Mugunghwa or the Korean Rose/ Rose of Sharon in English. This flower symbolises eternity or inexhaustible abundance hence the name ‘Mugung’, or the “eternal blossom that never fades”.  It represents the Korean people’s perseverance, strength and courage that have continued to prosper in their struggles throughout history.

The poem that is featured is from a famous poet named Heo Nanseolheon (1563-1589) from the Joseon Period. As well as a well known poet she was also a prolific painter. Her poem ‘Spring Rain’ is very famous, and reads in English:

Spring rain falls secretly on the western pond,

The chilly wind permeates the sink curtain.

As I lean against the folding screen in sorrow, apricot flowers bloom on the wall.

Many of her poems are filled with sorrow but with beautiful imagery representing her experience as a noble class women in the Joseon period.
