Makneki-neko 招き猫 also known as the "beckoning cat", usually placed near the entrance to households or businesses using its paw to bring in good luck and fortune! Usually depicted as the calico Japanese bobtail cat species. One of Maneki-Neko’s first known appearances is in the Edo Period (1603-1868) in a painting called “Joruri-machi Hanka no zu” showing a variation of the Maneki-Neko called Marushime-neko. The painting depicts a merchant selling Marushime-neko at his stall.

There are many legends surrounding the origin of the Maneki-Neko, the most popular being the story about a travelling Lord li Naotaka (Daimyo) coming across a cat beckoning him and his men to shelter inside a temple (Gōtoku-ji). As the Lord and his men entered the temple, a huge lightning bolt struck exactly where the Lord and his men where standing. The Lord attributed his life being saved by the cat and was deeply grateful for saving his life, resulting in the temple prospering from this event. The temple subsequentially created the Maneki-Neko to honour and remember the cat for bringing them good luck.

In modern day many other East Asians have adopted the Maneki-Neko most notably the overseas Chinese in Chinatowns across the world using it within their restaurants and businesses to bring in wealth and prosperity. The Maneki-Neko is usually called Zhao cai mao” in Mandarin.
