The front symbol has been inspired by a 'Tsuba' which is a sword guard of a samurai's sword (Katana). This particular design is from the 1800s in the late Edo period and made by Sunagawa Masayoshi a renowned tsuba craftsman. 

The back symbol has been inspried by a tsuba made also in the Edo period of Japan by the Kinai School, and was signed Echizen Ju Kinai Saku. The design conists of a traditonal decoration called 'Noshi' which is usually given as a token of good luck and wishes. 

The caligraphy on the sleeve reads 'Since the cresent moon, I have been waiting for tonght..' this is a haiku taken from a painting from 1891 by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Source below:
